BACK STORY:

On a snowy night in February of 1994, Jeff Buckley played a legendary set at Uncommon Ground. This performance was lauded “Best Concert of the Year” by Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune, and was later recalled by Mr. Kot as one of the best concerts he’s ever attended.

Now Uncommon Ground celebrates Buckley’s legacy each year by inviting artists from all over the world to pay tribute to the legendary artist. The 14th Annual Jeff Buckley Tribute is scheduled to take place on November 16th and 17, 2011. The event will be held at Uncommon Ground’s Clark and Grace location. Artists have come from countries such as France, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Mexico, UK, Australia and many others in past years to perform at the tribute.

This event, which is supported by the Buckley family and featured on the official Jeff Buckley web site, sells out every year in less than 10 minutes for both nights’ performances. Jeff Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, has been known to fly in for this event on many occasions.

All net proceeds for the night will go to The Old Town School of Folk Music Scholarship Fund: http://www.oldtownschool.org/

Jeff Buckley was born in California’s Orange County in 1966 and died in a tragic drowning accident in Memphis on May 29, 1997. He had emerged in New York City’s avant-garde club scene in the 1990’s as one of the most remarkable musical artists of his generation, acclaimed by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike. Matt Shingledecker, currently performing as “Roger” in the off-Broadway revival of Rent, and just completing a run as “Tony” in the Broadway revival of West Side Story, is featured on Broadway.Com and recently listed Jeff as an inspiration in his work.

“With his (fake) tattooed biceps, newly spiked hair and artful stubble, Shingledecker’s Roger looks quite different from his most recent role, clean-cut Tony in the Broadway revival of West Side Story. “Tony was always my dream role,” says Shingledecker, who studied classical voice in London during his college years at Elon University. “I got to do it on Broadway, and I was the last Tony to work with [librettist] Arthur Laurents. When it was over, I felt a sense of completion and an urge to do something totally different.” After winning over skeptical Rent producers, Shingledecker began to create Roger for himself. “I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from Jeff Buckley,” he says. “To be true to this piece, you really have to get in touch with some deep places in your soul. It’s therapeutic but exhausting.”

A rundown of Gilanyi’s most prized possessions, he sites The Jeff Buckley album, “Grace”, stating that:

“Music has always been kind of a big part of my creativity,” Gilanyi says. It’s a toss-up between Buckley, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt. He constantly shuffles between all three, but Buckley’s song, “Dream Brother,” which is included on Grace, is the first song featured in “Through the Looking Glass”, a fashion-inspired surfing film, an experience that easily qualifies as one of the most fulfilling of his life.
