UNCOMMON GROUND
20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
JULY 6th, 2011: “A Celebration of Jeff Buckley”
PHOTO GALLERY & RECAP
****************************************************************************
Uncommon Ground 20th Anniversary show with Spencer Michaud and the Family Tree, Todd Kessler and “Special Guest” Matthew Santos
By Leslie Harris Spencer
Congratulations go out to Uncommon Ground, Lakeview as they celebrate their 20-year anniversary featuring 20 consecutive days of performances and special events from July 1 through July 20, 2011, including a “Celebration of Jeff Buckley” Event on July 6th.
JBIN’s own Leslie Harris Spencer attended the event and shares her experience and photo gallery with us here:
As always, one looks forward to the food AND music of Uncommon Ground, and tonight was no exception! The menu for Guest Appreciation Wednesday Night at $25 per guest was amazing, featuring a 3-course presentation, including items like organic arugula & basil, local summer fruit & berries, rooftop honey, house Pappardelle Bolognese,, blueberry cheesecake, s’mores tart and more ! I am no food critic, but YUM! Not to mention the drink list…
Spencer Michaud was the first to begin at 8pm. He is a 5-year veteran of the Annual Jeff Buckley Tribute Concerts held on Jeff’s birthday at Uncommon Ground. Usually he is solo, but tonight Spencer had a bass player, Graham Lapp ,and, drummer Gabriel Craft in the “Family Tree.” Each performer was allowed 5 songs, and the following are what Spencer and the Family Tree played: “Mojo Pin”, “Grace”, “Lilac Wine”, “So Real”, and “I Want Someone Badly” (complete with “jazz kazoo”). Personal note: July 7th was Spencer’s birthday, and he recently got engaged. Conratulations ! www.spencermichaud.com
Next up was the “Special Guest” Matthew Santos, a Chicago artist familiar to Uncommon Ground. Performing with Santos, was Chihuan Yang on violin, Graham Burris on bass and Annalisa on vocals. Annalisa sent Matthew a video of herself covering his song “My Remedy” on YouTube, and joined him onstage in Texas for a show. Matthew invited her on tour and she accepted. The rest, as they say, is history. Their two voices together are absolutely beautiful, and very well suited to Jeff’s songs in particular. They performed “Last Goodbye”, “Yard of Blonde Girls”, “Everybody Here Wants You”, “New Year’s Prayer”, and “Lady Moon” (an original song inspired by the style of Jeff).
Matthew will be performing on July 20th at Schuba’s in Chicago. www.matthewsantos.com
From Matthew’s website: “Since his world-known collaborations with Grammy-Award winning hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco, Santos has faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions from music lovers than most singer/songwriters. Santos’ vocals are featured on multiple tracks on Fiasco’s Gold Record The Cool and most widely recognized on the Grammy-nominated single “Superstar.”
Finally, Todd Kessler, Chicago native and 3-year veteran of the Annual Tribute was up, along with bass/cellist Chris Bauer. “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” (Elton John cover), “All Flowers in Time”, “Forget Her”, “Farewell Angelina” (Bob Dylan), and “Hallelujah” (his personal “gateway to Jeff”). Echoing Matthew Santos’ performance anxiety when approaching the vocal stylings of Jeff Buckley, Todd states that his personal strategy is to “fake it and let adrenaline take over.” Todd and his band will be playing Centro Chicago (Ashland & Grace) on July 20th at a benefit for distressed teens in Israel. www.toddkesslermusic.com
Perhaps this writer is biased, but these 3 acts have no trouble honoring Jeff’s music while also adding their own personal style and touches. This “mini-tribute” was just as special as the shows in November, with each artist being able to do a few more songs with a relaxed pace and atmosphere.

Many of the 20 year celebration performances benefit Rock for Kids.

JAMES WALSH OF THRESHOLD STUDIOS
REMEMBERS JEFF BUCKLEY
************************************************************************
“Jeff, was Jeff… Intensely unique and all so rare…”
Jeff and his band rehearsed at Threshold Studios in NYC, on 41st for many years, right up until his trip to Memphis.
James Walsh of Threshold, tells JBIN, “One of the occasional pleasures I have is relating the history to artists that come in to the studio that cite Jeff as an inspiration in their musical development. Having rehearsed across the hall from him for all those years I have a couple of stories I’d like to share” James recounts some of his experiences working with Jeff at Threshold.
