‘ROLLING STONE’ READERS PICK:
“THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF THE NINETIES”
JEFF BUCKLEY’s “GRACE” – # 8

**********************************************************************************

‘Rolling Stone’ Readers Pick the “Top 10 Albums of the Nineties”. The list, including U2, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins and more, features Jeff Buckley’s “Grace” at number 8. “Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, containing possibly the definitive rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” the disc showcases one of the most stunning singing voices of the past few decades. It was re-released in 2004 with a slew of bonus tracks, including a surprisingly faithful cover of the MC5’s “Kick Out The Jams.”

ARTISTS INSPIRED BY JEFF BUCKLEY:
JANN KLOSE – Artist Interview
EVENT FEATURE: NY KNITTING FACTORY

****************************************************************************

Pop singer/songwriter Jann Klose has played three Jeff Buckley tributes at the Uncommon Ground in Chicago: 2008, 2009, and 2010. He’ll be performing at the “Jeff Buckley Tribute Event Curated by Gary Lucas at the Knitting Factory on March 18.

His critically-acclaimed album, “REVERIE” and music video “Doing Time” continue to build attention with AOL/Spinner featuring the video on its home page. The Washington Post writes “Klose wins over the listener with his soaring voice, which may well be a staple of chamber pop for a long time to come.”

Jann’s songs have been heard on the 2011 Grammy-nominated “HEALTHY FOOD FOR THOUGHT” compilation and in film and TV, including Warner Bros. “Dead Broke” featuring Paul Sorvino and MTV’s “Cribs.” Born in Germany, raised in Nairobi, Kenya and Johannesburg, South Africa, Jann lives in New York City.

He’s opened for and performed with an array of artists, including Renaissance, Melissa Ferrick, Marshall Crenshaw, Rosanne Cash, and Les Paul.

Recently Mary Guibert and Alison Raykovich caught up with Jann in Los Angeles, when he performed at the Mint, and talked with him about Jeff’s impact on Jann’s very eclectic musical style.

JBIN: Do you have any special stories about your experiences at the Jeff Buckley Uncommon Ground Tribute Events that you can sghare with us ?

JANN: I love the mix of artists that play the tribute… there is new and different talent every year. All types of musicians from varied backgrounds attend. I’ve stayed in touch with a lot of the folks I’ve met.

JBIN: Can you tell us a bit about the ways in which Jeff Buckley has inspired you as an artist ?

JANN: In many ways: As a performer he’s consummate and always in the moment. As a songwriter he’s unafraid of changes to traditional structure in arranging and composition. I can only imagine a personality that was clearly very colorful.

JBIN: You’re playing at “A Jeff Buckley Tribute Event Curated By Gary Lucas @ The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, NY on March 18th. What can we look forward to from you there ?

JANN: I will have my bassist and kora player Chris Marolf with me on the gig as well as accordinist/pianist Lars Potteiger. We’ll play some of the tunes we’ve covered in the past 3 years at the Chicago Tribute.

JBIN: Any special thoughts on your contribution of the song “Give in to this Life”, as part of the “Healthy Food For Thought” album, which was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in Best Album: Spoken Word For Children ? We hear you performed “Give in to this Life” at the first Jeff Buckley Tribute you played at.

JANN: That’s right… we did indeed perform that tune. I think I felt like it fit well. The Grammy nomination is exciting. I just got back from L.A. where I played a few shows and attended the Grammy’s for the first time. I can only give kudos to the HFFT production team. They did an amazing job. Check out the album with music and poetry by Julian Lennon, Moby, Tom Chapin, Russell Simmons… it’s great and you can learn more about it at http://healthyfoodforthought.com & http://www.jannklose.com/

People Magazine reports that at “Vanessa Paradis’s concert Wednesday night in New York City, the audience was filled with fans from France, couples extending their Valentine’s Day love and … Paradis’s own love, Johnny Depp.”

“Depp, 47, who has two children with Paradis, 38, sat in the front row of the balcony, his eyes fixated on her throughout the two-hour show. She sang mostly in French, dedicating one song to “love and fire,” and producing a beautiful, feminine rendition of Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah.” … Depp Gives Vanessa Paradis a Standing Ovation at evening’s end. Oregon Live features Holcombe Waller’s new album ‘Into the Dark Unknown’. Barbara Mitchell describes Waller’s voice as “otherworldly, vulnerable, and haunted,” … Waller’s lyrics mention Jeff Buckley, in the song “Risk of Change”, in reference to a conversation he had with a friend, who was also a friend of Jeff’s, about the creative process and life’s challenges.
“Into the Dark Unknown” grew out of a live performance Waller put together in 2008. It’s a journey through one person’s doubts, insecurities, certainties and transitions that strikes a chord on both a sonic and emotional level.

The album, he said, is a “contemplative sort of spiritual exploration or something, that is really a lot about transitioning permanently into adulthood and watching friends have children and watching my parents grow old and I don’t know — those things hit you. Have hit me in these past few years.”

MARY’S MAILBAG

…with love from M. G.

If you have a question for Mary, please tell us what City/Country you are writing from and send them to: [email protected] Letters reprinted by permission

*********

Dear Mary,
Please, can you tell me if the “KING THEATER” MP3 download is still available? It was on the website for purchase when the “Grace Around The World” album was released and now I can’t find it?
Many Thanks,
Paul D.

*********

Greetings, Paul

Thanks so much for your question. What you are referring to is the mastered recording of Jeff’s incredible 1995 performance at The King Theater in Seattle, WA. The King Theater MP3 download was made available by SONY in June of 2009 to celebrate the release of the “Grace Around The World” DVD and Deluxe Edition. It was a part of the pre-order “Fan Bundle” that was sold only on the SONY website. After the release of GATW, the MP3 download option was removed, and we have not heard anything from SONY indicating that they plan to re-release it.

This question also addresses another, more frequent one: many fans have inquired over the years about the possibility of various live shows being released. As many of you know, SONY owns all master rights to Jeff’s performances under his contract with them. Any release or re-release is done so at their discretion. We at Jeff Buckley Music are very limited in control over the release of Jeff’s recordings – in studio and live, and even as a producer of a project, I can only try to make my opinion heard and respected.

As do Jeff’s loyal fans, we hope one day to see all of Jeff’s wonderful, worldwide concerts available for release!

Best Regards,
Mary
