We all watched in horror as floods devastated New Orleans in 2005. We could only imagine the thousands of stories, the thousands of tragedies, and they’re still on-going. I’m going to tell you about one of them, and a way that you can make a difference in that story.
It was a small miracle that put Stevenson Palfi at the old Howlin’ Wolf club the night Jeff performed there, in 1995. It was another small miracle that prompted still-photographer, Merri Cyr, to put her video camera in the hands of the legendary documentarian of New Orleans’ seminal blues and jazz musicians. In fact, it was because of a collection of small miracles that we were able to reclaim and include that footage in “Grace Around the World”, the DVD which was just released. For that reason we dedicated the DVD to Stevenson’s memory.
It was in the aftermath of Katrina, when the levees broke, that Stevenson’s life’s work was destroyed. When he gave up hope of retrieving the remnants of a life devoted to the passion of photographing and filming musical history, he sunk into a deep depression and took his own life. He left behind a daughter, Nell, and her mother, Polly, who is now administering his estate, and doing what she can to retrieve and preserve what was and is a considerable gift to the world, which was Stevenson’s passion captured on film.
I will be attending one last “Grace Around the World” release event, in New Orleans, this Saturday, August 8. It will be at the NEW Howlin’ Wolf (much bigger!), and it will benefit Stevenson’s family. The admission is only $10 per person, there will be a full screening of the DVD (big screen – big speakers!), there will be live music, there will be door prizes, there will be freebees, we will meet, we will have fun. Please come! Let’s fill the town and the club with Jeff Buckley fans!!
Also, in order to raise as much money as we can for Nell and Polly, I have selected 17 CDs* from Jeff’s personal collection, and am offering them on eBay. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the proceeds from the auctions and the event will be donated to Nell and Polly. Also included in each auction is one Mystery White Boy Shirt ( now out of production and no longer available anywhere else), Set of Jeff Buckley Postcards, Guitar Pics and Tattoo Set with Jeff’s hand designed flaming skull artwork.

On July 3, 2009, CNN premiered Jeff Buckley 15 years of Grace, exploring the enduring legacy of Jeff Buckley, 12 years after his death. CNN aired the five+ minute feature through its various mass media outlets including CNN International, CNN Espanol, and CNN.com. The segment was reported by CNN producer Quinn Brown and includes footage of Jeff Buckley during the Grace campaign, interspersed with interviews of his mother Mary Guibert, Laurie Trombley of Once & Future Productions (co-director of the documentary Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley) and band mate / co-songwriter Michael Tighe.
Tighe’s appearance marks his only filmed interview concerning Jeff in 2009. Sources indicate that CNN may also re-release this segment to CNN US when the official anniversary of Grace hits in August 2009.

The 12th Annual Jeff Buckley Tribute at Uncommon Ground in Chicago is scheduled to take place on November 17th & 18th 2008. Artists have come from countries such as France, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Mexico, UK, Australia and many others in past years to perform at the tribute. Artists may submit Jeff Buckley covers OR songs that Jeff Buckley covered; originals about or inspired by Jeff Buckley, in varying styles suitable for conversion to an acoustic/unplugged performance. Selected artists may perform one of each as well on both nights.
This event, which is supported by Jeff Buckley Music and featured on this official Jeff Buckley web site, sells out every year in less than 10 minutes for both nights’ performances. Jeff Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, has been known to fly in for this event on many occasions. All net proceeds for the night will benefit The Old Town School of Folk Music Scholarship Fund, which allows musicians of all ages who can’t afford to pay attend classes. http://www.oldtownschool.org
A bit of history:
On a snowy night in February of 1994, Jeff Buckley played a legendary set at Uncommon Ground. This performance was lauded “Best Concert of the Year” by Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune, and was recently recalled by Mr. Kot as one of the best concerts he’s ever attended.
Jeff Buckley was born in California’s Orange County in 1966 and died in a tragic drowning accident in Memphis on May 29, 1997. He had emerged in New York City’s avant-garde club scene in the 1990’s as one of the most remarkable musical artists of his generation, acclaimed by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike.
